MoonPay Launches Mastercard for AI Agents

MoonAgents Card will draw on an onchain wallet

Crypto payments firm MoonPay has launched a new virtual debit Mastercard designed for AI agents as well as human users.

Using stablecoins and offering merchants payment in fiat, the MoonAgents Card is accepted at any online merchant across 210 countries that accepts Mastercard. The card is issued through Monavate, a regulated global payments platform and principal member of the Mastercard network.

The launch comes just a day after digital wallet and payment app startup Oobit announced the launch of a new stablecoin-backed corporate Visa debit card designed for AI agents.

Unlike the Oobit card, the MoonAgents Card does not require users to pre-load a custodial balance in stablecoins, but rather allows users to enable or delegate authority to agents to spend directly from an onchain wallet at the point of sale.

“Agents are already managing wallets, executing trades, and moving value onchain,” said Ivan Soto-Wright, CEO and founder of MoonPay, in a statement. “The one thing they couldn’t do was spend at a merchant. Now they can.”

The MoonAgents Card links a self-custodial wallet to a Mastercard virtual payment card through Monavate’s infrastructure, with Monavate handling the onchain funding and card authorization in real time. If a transaction is declined, funds return to the wallet immediately. Wallet custody is never transferred, and approvals can be revoked at any time.

“AI agents are going to transact constantly, at machine speed, across millions of merchants,” said JP Richardson, CEO and co-founder of Exodus, which is providing the self-custodial wallet used by the MoonAgents Card. “Exodus has spent a decade building self-custodial wallets for people. MoonAgents Card extends that infrastructure to agents, letting them spend directly from an onchain wallet. The wallets and cards that work for that future look nothing like what exists today—and we’re building for that future.”

The new AI agent cards come as industry insiders expect the number of AI agents transactions in crypto and the broader e-commerce industry to explode.

“Very soon, there are going to be more AI agents than humans making transactions,” said Conbase CEO Brian Armstrong in March. “They can’t open a bank account, but they can own a crypto wallet.”
