The Modern Consensus 2018 Crypto Twitter Power List

Bitcoin celebrated its 10^th anniversary of its first block going live on Thursday and arguably no social medium has been more effective at spreading the Gospel of Satoshi to the masses quite like Twitter. Yet which ones mattered most in 2018?

The easiest thing to do would be to think up a bunch of accounts that tweeted about crypto and just add up the amount of followers they had. But that doesn’t tell us which ones were actually important to the crypto community. For example, CNN may tweet about Bitcoin prices falling; they have an extraordinary amount of followers but they’re not exactly a go-to source for most of those who care about cryptocurrencies.  We had to come up with a smarter method.

We decided to take a look at Twitter data from the entire year and, using Facebook’s proprietary CrowdTangle tool, we filtered for relevant terms like “Bitcoin,” “Ethereum,” “crypto,” and “blockchain,” among others. We then ranked accounts based on how users interacted with those tweets—but not with “@” replies; those can give us junk data. Rather, we looked at how much people liked and reshared the crypto-related tweets since it gave us a sense of those accounts’ power and influence. We took the top 25 accounts with the most interactions on their crypto tweets and ranked them accordingly.

That’s one may see Anthonly Pompliano at No. 2 even though he has 180,529 followers yet CNBC’s Twitter account, with over 3 million followers, ranks at No. 20. On Crypto Twitter, “Pomp” matters more than CNBC.
